The injured were taken to hospital, said Furqan Khan, the deputy commissioner of Kohat district.
As per information, all the bodies recovered so far from Tanda Dam lake, near Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, were aged between seven and 14 years old and were students at a nearby religious school.
Local police officer, Mir Rauf said that 11 children had been rescued from the water, with six in critical condition. The boat was carrying over 30 students on a day trip from a local madrassa when it overturned.
“A rescue operation is underway,” said Rauf.
Caretaker Chief Minister Azam Khan expressed grief over the incident and directed the district administration and rescue organisations to start a rescue operation on an emergency basis.
Notably, mass drownings are common in Pakistan, when aged and overloaded ships lose their stability and passengers fall into the water.
