New Delhi, June 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, Cyclone Biparjoy, a severe cyclonic storm, will pass through Saurashtra, Kutch and the neighbouring Pakistani coasts between Mandvi and Karachi today, close to Gujarat’s Jakhau Port. Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall at 4-5 pm today.
As a precaution, more than 74,000 residents of the Gujarat coast have been relocated to safer areas, and the state government has sent out disaster management teams to help with rescue and relief efforts. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, had a review meeting with officials to examine the situation before cyclone Biparjoy made landfall.
The Saurashtra-Kutch region had heavy rainfall and strong winds as the storm approached the Gujarat coast, according to the Meteorological department. For quick humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in Gujarat, the Indian Coast Guard has prepared ships, relief personnel and helicopters.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has designated a total of 33 teams to conduct relief and rescue operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra prior to the anticipated arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy.
