New Delhi, June 23: Twitter is currently testing a new feature that will allow users to post longer than the allotted 280 characters in a single piece of material.
According to Variety, Twitter is developing a new feature called “Notes” that would enable users to exchange links to essays-like write-ups both inside and outside of the social media network.
Users may now write, publish, and share pieces on Twitter that contain text – up to 2,500 words — as well as images, videos, and GIFs. A teaser of the content in the longer post will be included in the Note card’s appearance in the Twitter timeline as a tweet.
“We’re currently running a closed test with a small group of writers who will help us learn how best to support people who come to write on Twitter,” the company said.
A limited group of writers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ghana are now participating in the company’s Notes public test.
Twitter posts were initially limited to 140 characters in order to comply with the established length restriction for SMS text messages sent from mobile devices. It increased the tweet character limit to 280 in 2017.
If a writer they follow uploads a Note card, someone they follow tweets a Note URL, or someone they follow retweets or quote-tweets a Note card, Twitter users will see the new Note card in their timeline. In addition, Notes will have distinctive URLs that users can access whether or not they are logged into Twitter and from outside the Twitter platform.
