New Delhi, July 5: According to the most recent data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India’s overall jobless rate increased to 7.80% in June from 7.12% in May.
The rural areas of India had the greatest drop in work possibilities, with an increase in the unemployment rate from 6.62 percent to 8.03 percent in June.
Due to a wider trend of greater opportunities in Indian cities compared to rural areas since the year’s beginning, the rate of unemployment in urban areas fell last month from 8.21 to 7.30 percent.
Urban unemployment dropped from 7.3 percent in June of this year to 7.27 percent in March of 2021. The nation’s overall unemployment rate was 7.8% in June compared to 7.12% in May. In April, it was 7.83 percent.
In March, the rural unemployment rate was 7.24 percent; in April, it was 7.18 percent; and in May, it was 6.62 percent. According to the MGNAREGA dashboard, which is maintained by the rural development ministry, as reported by FE on July 2, in June of this year, nearly 31.7 million households and 43.2 million people were looking for work, up from 25.4 million and 35.3 million respectively in the same month in 2019–20, the year before the pandemic hit the country.
While there was a greater demand for employment from households and individuals in June of FY21 and FY22 compared to June of FY23, those were the years that saw significant reverse migration, which contributed to the rise in demand for jobs under the rural job guarantee scheme.
