Ranchi, July 6: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand police has taken over the investigation of the police firing case.

A three-member team of the CID comprising Dy SP M.S.Munda, inspector Rajesh Kumar and inspector Ravikant will probe the case. While Munda has been appointed the investing officer, two inspectors will assist him.

ADG (CID) Prashant Singh confirmed the development saying that ‘the case which the CID has taken for probe is 10/2022 and it was registered at the Daily Market police station.’

A CID official said the particular case had been transferred to the CID on June 24, following the guidelines of the NHRC.  IG (Human Rights) Akhilkesh Kumar Jha directed the probe getting instruction from DGP Neeraj Sinha.

“As many as 48 cases have been registered at various police stations, including one overtaken by the CID. The rest 47 cases are being investigated by the Ranchi Police,” the CID official said.

On June 10 this year violence had erupted after Muslims organised a protest march against the derogatory remarks of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma regarding Prophet Mohammed. The police had to open fire to control the violence. Two persons had died in the firing. Several including police officials and protestors also sustained injuries. The incident threw normal life out of gear for a week and the administration had to work hard to bring normalcy.

A PIL has already been filed in the matter in the Jharkhand High Court. Social activist Pankaj Yadav filed the PIL on June 17. The Jharkhand High Court heard the case on June 24.

The high court has asked the state government to explain how 10,000 individuals gathered in a public space. Aside from that, the court inquired about the number of people killed in the incident, as well as the number of rounds of bullets fired by the police. The court also asked whether or not other measures like tear gas shells and water cannons were used by the police or not. The  State government is expected to file a reply by July 8 in the High Court.
