New Delhi, July 15: Mohammed Zubair, a co-founder of Alt News who has been charged by the Delhi Police with violating the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act of 2010 and encouraging animosity amongst religious groups through his tweets, was granted bail by a Delhi court on Friday.

The order was given by Additional Sessions Judge Devender Kumar Jangala.

He had to provide a personal bond in the sum of Rs 50,000 and one surety in the same amount before being granted bail.

Following a hearing from Zubair’s attorney Vrinda Grover and Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava, the Court had reserved its decision on the bail request on Thursday.

After the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate rejected his plea on July 2 and sentenced him to 14 days in judicial prison, Zubair requested bail from the court.

He was first charged with violating the Indian Penal Code Sections 153A (promote hostility between religious groups) and 295 (damage to or desecration of a place of worship with the intent to insult the religion of any class) (IPC).

Thereafter, offences under Sections 201 (evidence destruction) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC as well as Section 35 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 were added.

The complaint against Zubair was made by a Twitter account called Hanuman Bhakt, who claimed that Zubair had posted a dubious image with the goal of purposefully offend a Hindu deity.
