New Delhi, July 28: Following the death of 42 persons from drinking spurious alcohol, the Gujarat Home Department on Thursday transferred the superintendents of police for Botad and Ahmedabad and suspended six additional officers.
Police have discovered via initial investigations that a few insignificant bootleggers from several villages in the Botad district produced the fake whiskey by combining water with methyl alcohol or Methanol, a highly dangerous industrial solvent, and sold it to the peasants for Rs 20 per pouch.
Police claim that forensic testing proved the victims drank methyl alcohol.
“We have transferred Botad SP Karanraj Vaghela and Ahmedabad SP Virendrasingh Yadav. Six other police officials, including two Deputy SPs, have been placed under suspension,” said Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Raj Kumar.
Who have been suspended are N V Patel of the Dholka division in Ahmedabad, S K Trivedi of the Botad division, K P Jadeja of the Dhandhuka police station in Ahmedabad, S B Chaudhari of the Dhandhuka division’s circle police, and B G Vala and Shailendrasinh Rana of the Botad division.
According to the Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, 42 residents of Botad and the nearby Ahmedabad district have already passed away as a result of ingesting the fake alcohol on July 25, while 97 others are still being treated in hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad, and Ahmedabad.
In order to ensure swift justice, he stated that the police will file a charge sheet within 10 days and that the government will also designate a Special Public Prosecutor to handle the case.
