New Delhi, July 29: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised questions over the illicit drug and alcohol trade in Gujarat today in reference to the recent hooch tragedy in the state. He also questioned which political institutions were providing security to the involved ‘mafias.’

According to Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi,  residents of Gujarat’s Botad and neighbouring Ahmedabad districts have already perished as a result of consuming the toxic alcohol on July 25. However, 97 additional patients are still being treated at hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad, and Ahmedabad.

“In ‘dry state’ Gujarat, many houses were destroyed due to the consumption of illicit liquor. Drugs worth billions are also being recovered from there continuously,” Rahul Gandhi said today in a tweet in Hindi.

“It is a matter of great concern, on the land of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) and Sardar (Vallabhbhai) Patel, who are these people who are indiscriminately doing the business of intoxication?” he further questioned.

Notably in the Gujarat case, fifteen important suspects have already been detained, including the person who bought the chemical and those who sold the alcohol to customers.
