Dumka, Aug 24: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire in her house by a boy of her neighbourhood in Khijuriya locality under the town police station of the sub-capital town on Tuesday morning (August 23) being in one sided love affair with her.
The victim Ankita Kumari, a student of class 11 in local plus two government girls high school was asleep in her room when the accused Shahrukh (22) ventured into her house and allegedly poured petrol on her body from the window before setting her ablaze.
The accused, according to her family members, often teased her while going to her school and proposed to have a love affair despite her repeated denial to oblige her.
Shahrukh has been arrested by the police and has confessed to having committed the crime in a bid to teach the victim a lesson for not complying with his motive.
“The accused threw petrol on my daughter from outside the window before setting her on fire when she was asleep and escaped even before anyone of the family members could have understood anything,” Sanjay Singh, the father of the victim girl said to the police adding he had also threatened her of dire consequences.
“The accused was arrested immediately after committing the crime and the case is being investigated on the basis of the statement of the victim been recorded in the presence of a magistrate,” Dy SP Noor Mustafa Ansari said.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of the town police station Nitesh Kumar said that the condition of the victim girl was still critical at the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital where she was immediately rushed by the family members.
“The accused claimed to have been betrayed by the victim girl in terms of establishing an affair with another boy which appears to be the prima facie reason of his having gone violent to that extent to kill her,” the OC said.
