New Delhi, Aug 28: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Sunday will virtually meet to endorse the election schedule for the next party leader. Sonia Gandhi, who travelled abroad for a medical examination, will preside over the gathering.
The veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad’s resignation from the party and his letter accusing Rahul Gandhi of pushing the Congress past the point of no return also frame the meeting.
The CWC members would reportedly show trust in Sonia and Rahul Gandhi’s leadership as well.
Party insiders stated that the election of the president would be delayed by a few weeks, but not by more than that, prior to the CWC meeting, which is slated to start at 3:30 pm. According to the sources, the party should have a permanent leader by October.
The election for the new party president will take place between August 21 and September 20 this year, the Congress said in October of last year.
According to a decision made by the CWC, elections for block committees and one representative for each state’s Congress unit will take place from April 16 to May 31, followed by elections for district committee chiefs from June 1 to July 20, state chiefs and AICC members from July 21 to August 20, and the AICC president from August 21 to September 20.
