Islamabad, Aug 30: Over 33 million people, one in every seven Pakistanis, have been affected, and the death toll from the floods in Pakistan has surpassed 1,100.

According to a statement from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), since June 14 there have been at least 1,136 fatalities and 1,634 injuries due to rain and flooding.

Authorities were still attempting to access isolated villages in the hilly north, it added, noting that 28 people had died in the last 24 hours.

According to the NDMA, 157 bridges were washed away, 3,457 kilometres (approximately 2,200 miles) of roads were devastated, and more than two million acres of planted crops were lost.

The National Flood Reaction and Coordination Center would serve as an institutional response to the flood tragedy, the Pakistan coalition government decided on Monday after considering the situation.

“The centre will serve as a bridge between disaster management authorities, donors and government institutions,” PM Shehbaz said on his Twitter handle.
