New Delhi, Aug 31: VK Saxena, the lieutenant governor of Delhi, announced today that he would sue Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) officials, including MLAs Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, for making ‘extremely defamatory and baseless’ accusations of corruption against him.

When Saxena served as the chairman of a government Khadi organisation during the 2016 demonetization, the AAP claims that he exchanged prohibited bank notes worth Rs. 1,400 crore. The AAP accusation was rejected by Saxena as a ‘figment of their imagination.’

According to officials, Jasmine Shah, the deputy chairman of the Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission, would also face legal action.

“This has been the hallmark of (Arvind) Kejriwal and co. to shoot and scoot and then when pushed for truth, apologise,” said Saxena’s office in a statement.

“The LG has taken a serious view of these blatantly false, defamatory and obviously diversionary allegations made by these AAP leaders and has decided to take legal action against them so that the AAP does not get away with its characteristic shoot and scoot,” it added.

When it was discovered that some demonetized notes were placed in the account of Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan, according to Saxena, a vigilance enquiry was launched. Four employees were suspended.

When the CBI intervened, it discovered that just two of the officers were engaged and that 17,07,000 in prohibited notes had been deposited. The Lieutenant Governor’s office reported that the case is still pending in court.

In response to the slander action, AAP demanded an investigation.
