New Delhi, Sept 2: Nearly 150 people gathered outside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 at the crack of dawn on Friday to demand a full refund or tickets on alternative flights after German airline Lufthansa cancelled hundreds of flights due to a union strike that started at midnight, including two services to Frankfurt and Munich from India.

Up to 800 of Lufthansa’s scheduled flights for today may be cancelled, potentially affecting up to 1.3 lakh passengers.

As tens of thousands of people return home following the conclusion of the summer vacation in European nations, the airline has acknowledged that the strike would have a substantial impact on aircraft operations and that passengers will be affected.

Pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit has called for a 5.5% salary increase for its more than 5,000 members as well as automatic inflation insurance in a one-day walkout.

The airlines justified their stance by stating that they had made a deal with an 18-month duration, as part of which, pilots at Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo will get 900 euros more in basic pay per month over two phases. The business said that this would especially help entry-level earnings.
