Ranchi, Sept 5: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is facing a possible disqualification as an MLA, will seek a vote of confidence during the Assembly’s special session on Monday.

The uncertainty surrounding Hemant Soren’s future as Jharkhand Chief Minister began when the Election Commission (EC) issued an opinion to Governor Ramesh Bais seeking Soren’s disqualification.

Though the EC’s verdict has not been made public, there is speculation that the poll panel has recommended that the chief minister be disqualified as an MLA for breaking electoral rules.

In the face of a disqualification threat, Soren’s party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), believes the BJP would make a concerted effort to abduct MLAs from both the JMM and its ally, the Congress, in order to destabilise the government. On August 30, 32 ruling coalition MLAs were escorted to a resort in Raipur, the capital of Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh. They have returned to Ranchi in preparation for the trust vote.

The Election Commission has presented its recommendation to the Governor, who is anticipated to make a decision on Soren soon. In the 81-member house, the ruling coalition has 49 MLAs, with a majority of 41. The JMM has 30 MLAs, the Congress has 18, and Tejashwi Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has one. The biggest opposition party, the BJP, has 26 MLAs.
