Jamshedpur: Steel City shocked over Cyrus Mistry’s death

Jamshedpur, Sept 5: The news of Cyrus Mistry’s tragic death in a road mishap on Sunday came as a big shock for Jamshedpur where he had visited as many as seven times during his stint as chairman of Tata Sons.

Right from company officials to members of Tata Workers Union and local residents everyone condoled his untimely death.

Members of the Singhbhum Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( SCCI ) and other industry outfits at Adityapur in adjoining Seraikela- Kharsawan district condoled the tragic end of Mistry.

“We remember his visit to the Chamber Bhavan during his first visit to Jamshedpur in 2013 after he tookover as the Tata group’s sixth chairman. He had addressed the members of the trade body,” recalled a senior functionary of SCCI.

Employees of Tata Steel’s sports department said that Cyrus Mistry had on a couple of occasion took active part in tug-of-war contest organised as a part of Founder’s Day Sports on March 3 at the Bistupur- based Gopal Maidan.

Mistry, who was appointed as the new chairman in December 2012, remained at the company’s helm for about four years till October, 2016 when he had an unceremonious exit after a boardroom coup.

Till his appointment as the chairman to lead Tata Sons, not many knew of Cyrus Mistry, who was then associated only with his family business.

A south Mumbai low-profile boy, Mistry ( who died at the age of 54 ) family scion was already heading companies in the Shapoorji Pallonji Group when he was appointed to succeed Ratan Tata as the head of the over USD 100 billion, salt-to-software Tata group.

Cyrus Mistry got married in 1992. He married Rohiqa Chagla, daughter of Iqbal Chagla, one of India’s most prominent lawyers. The couple has two sons.
