SC to hear pleas challenging Sec 6A of Citizenship Act on Nov 1

New Delhi, Sept 7: The constitution bench of the Supreme Court said on Wednesday that it will hear the pleas challenging the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act relating to illegal immigrants in Assam on November 1.

The bench includes judge D.Y. Chandrachud, M.R. Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and P.S. Narasimha has scheduled a hearing on the case for November 1,

The Court is hearing a case challenging Section 6A of the Citizenship Act supplemented by an amendment in 1985 in the prosecution of Assam Accord. The Assam Agreement is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoS) signed between Indian government officials and leaders of the Assam movement. It was signed in the presence of then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, in New Delhi on 15 August 1985. The heart of the agreement was to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Assam, where which the Assam Union of Students (AASU) has opposed since 1979.
