Daltonganj, Sept 10: Villagers, jawans of the CRPF and trackers of the Palamu Tiger Reserve rescued a 2-month-old male elephant calf from Mandal dam on Friday, said the Deputy Director of North division of PTR Kumar Ashish.

The rescued calf has been brought down to Betla National Park today and is housed with an elderly captive female elephant of the PTR named Juhi.

The rescued calf has injuries in its right eye and right ear which it is suspected to have sustained in the Mandal dam water from where it must be too desperate to come out.

“We wonder how its mother left it in water and moved on. The entire herd also moved on. This a very strange behaviour of the mother elephant as usually they do every possible effort to save their baby but here this luckless calf has been disowned,” Ashish said.

“Our trackers and forest guards are on the lookout for the herd of the elephants and its mother for reuniting this rescued calf but in case we don’t find them then we will take care of it in Betla and Juhi will continue to be its foster mother,” Ashish added.
