New Delhi, Sept 16: The Mumbai Indians announced on Friday that former South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher will take over as their head coach for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced earlier this week that Boucher would leave his position as the men’s senior team’s head coach following the 2017 T20 World Cup, which will take place in Australia in October-November.

Boucher, who holds the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicketkeeper, has had a long and distinguished career as a wicketkeeper and batsman. After retiring, he took over as coach for South Africa’s best cricket team, Titans, and guided them to five domestic championships.

Cricket South Africa appointed Mark Boucher as the head coach in 2019 where he crafted 11 Test wins, 12 in ODIs and 23 T20I victories.

“It is an honor and privilege to be appointed as Head Coach of MI. Their history and achievements as a franchise clearly put them up there as one of the most successful sporting franchises in all of world sport,” Boucher stated in an official media release, issued by Mumbai Indians.

“I look forward to the challenge and respect the need for results. It’s a strong unit with great leadership and players. I look forward to adding value to this dynamic unit,” he added.

Mahela Jayawardene, a former head coach of the Mumbai Indians, was chosen earlier this week to serve as the organization’s Global Head of Performance. The former Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan, has also been given a new position. Now he will serve as MI’s global head of cricket development. The two make up the core of the team for the team’s “expanding global cricket footprint,” according to a statement made by Mumbai Indians.
