New Delhi, Sept 18: A severe earthquake that struck Taiwan’s southeast coast on Sunday caused at least one building in a tiny village to collapse and prompted Japan to issue a tsunami warning.

At a depth of 10 kilometres, the earthquake struck at 2:44 p.m. (06:44 GMT) around 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Taitung, according to the USGS.

The USGS eventually lowered the earthquake from its initial strength of 7.2 to 6.9 magnitude. The village of Yuli experienced at least one structure fall, according to Taiwan’s semi-official Central News Agency.

Residents running towards the collapsed building as it blew up a dense cloud of dust can be seen in video uploaded by CNA.

In this steep, thinly populated rural area, there have been numerous tremors since a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the same area on Saturday. But Sunday’s earthquake was significantly more powerful.

Remote islands close to Taiwan have received a tsunami warning from Japan’s Meteorological Agency. Around 4 pm (0700 GMT), waves up to one metre high were forecast to reach.
