Chandigarh, Sept 18: The Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday ordered a high-level probe after a controversy erupted over claims that objectionable videos of female students were recorded and shared by another woman student.

Notably, a controversy broke up on Sunday in response to allegations that a female student at Chandigarh University had secretly filmed some objectionable videos of female students. A high-level investigation into the event has now been requested by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Describing the incident as ‘unfortunate’, CM Bhagwant Mann in a tweet said that ‘daughters are our dignity and pride’, adding that ‘any such incident is highly condemnable.’

CM Mann said that he is peeved to learn about the entire matter and has asked the district administration to undertake in-depth enquiry into the incident. He made it clear that anyone found guilty would not escape punishment, and that the perpetrators of the heinous crime would face harsh punishment.

The chief minister added that he is in constant touch with the district administration and is keeping a tab on the entire situation. Bhagwant Mann urged the people to not get swayed by the ‘rumours being spread by some anti-social elements’. He warned that strict action will also be taken against those who are spreading rumours regarding the sensitive issue.

On Sunday, the Punjab Police also arrested a woman student of Chandigarh University for allegedly making objectionable videos of hostel inmates. The action was taken after hostel inmates claimed their videos went viral.

However, the university has issued a statement that there was only one ‘leaked’ clip and that it was a personal video that the accused sent to her boyfriend in Shimla.

In a statement released by Chandigarh University, pro-chancellor RS Bawa said, “The rumour which is circulating through the media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students is totally false and baseless. During the preliminary investigation conducted by the university, there have been no videos found of any student that are objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl that she shared with her boyfriend.”

The Punjab Police also dismissed rumours of suicide attempt by some girls over the leaked videos.

“As per medical records, no suicide attempt or death has taken place. One student who was taken in an ambulance was suffering from anxiety, and our team is in contact with her,” said Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivek Soni.
