New Delhi, Oct 21: Union Home minister Amit Shah on Friday said, throughout the past eight years of the Narendra Modi administration, the security situation has improved in the northeastern insurgency-affected regions, in Jammu and Kashmir, and in the states afflicted by Naxal activity.

At the National Police Memorial in the Chanakyapuri neighbourhood of this city on the occasion of National Police Commemoration Day, Shah gave a speech to senior police and paramilitary commanders.

“In the northeast, we have removed the special powers given to the armed forces (under the AFSPA) and instead, given special powers to the youngsters there, resulting in a decline of violence in these areas by more than 70 per cent,” he said.

According to Shah, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is such that those who previously threw stones at security officers have changed into ‘panches’ and ‘sarpanches.’

He said, “The national anthem is being sung in Eklavya schools while the national flag flutters on these structures in the states impacted by Left Wing Extremism (LWE).”

According to Shah, India is moving forward in terms of development as a result of the sacrifices made by law enforcement and paramilitary troops all around the nation. In expressing his gratitude to these individuals, he noted that they were instrumental in containing the COVID-19 outbreak.

Notably, in memory of 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who were killed on this day in 1959 in an ambush by Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Hot Spring area, the National Police Commemoration Day is observed.
