Dhanbad, Oct 22: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur principal Dr K N Singh today said that his institution has permission for admission on 100 MBBS seats in the 2022-23 academic sessions and the college is geared up to enroll students on all allotted quotas.

Brushing aside the confusion prevailing in the state that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has reduced 50 MBBS (from 100 seats) of MGMMCH Jamshedpur in the 2022-23 session, Dr Singh said that he does not know why the confusion is being created about one of the oldest medical colleges of the state while he has been constantly refuting the rumour for last several days.

“I got the letter from NMC four days ago (on October 19) in which MGMMCH has been asked to take admissions on the number of seats it had enrolled last year (in 2021-22 academic sessions). Last year, MGMMCH had take admissions on 100 MBBS seats. So, this session we would again take admission on 100 MBBS seats,” said the principal when contacted by this correspondent.

A senior official of the state health department medical wing said that NMC has maintained the status quo in the 2022 academic session. Neither an MBBS seat has been increased nor deducted in any medical college across the country. Following this stand of NMC, Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad could not get the 50 MBBS seats increased this session which it had expected and deserved after fulfilling almost all deficiencies pointed out by an NMC inspection team last year.

The confusion over the reduction of 50 MBBS seats in MGMMCH Jamshedpur was further aggravated when Health Minister Banna Gupta at a programme on October 17 in Ranchi blamed the central government for it when asked questions about MGMMCH (reduction of 50 MBBS seats).

Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Health Arun Kumar Singh when asked about it by a media person on October 20 denied having any information and at the same time, he said that he would get a report about it.

MGMMCH principal Dr Singh said that he has set up a committee for the admission of NEET-qualified students to start the session with the allotted quota.
