Jamshedpur, Nov 25: The Narbheram Hansraj English School celebrated its Foundation Day on Friday.

Named after the pioneer, Narbheram Hansraj Kamani, the Narbheram Hansraj English School Society celebrated the day with a number of activities. The function was graced by Nakul Kamani, the president of the school managing committee; Varsha Gandhi, honorary secretary along with other members of the committee and distinguished guests.

The function commenced with the felicitation of the benefactors who had stepped forward to sponsor the education of needy students during the pandemic. The committee members who have completed 15 years as members of the management committee were also felicitated by Nakul Kamani. Later, students also presented a cultural programme.

It is believed that Narbheram Hansraj Kamani, a resident of Saurashtra, was the first Gujarati to arrive in the steel city. Coming in search of business, Kamani later got his relatives and friends seeing the opportunity here in the early 20th century. Today, the city has over 1,000 Gujarati families.

As Narbheram Hansraj Kamani expanded his business, he started getting involved in philanthropic activities. He set up the Gujarati ME School in 1924 in Bistupur on a piece of land given by Tata Steel. In 1987, the Narbheram Hansraj English School, one of the leading institutions of the city affiliated with the CISCE came into existence. His vision was carried forward by his grandson Nakul Kamani who led the school in pursuit of excellence.

The celebrations also included the distribution of blankets among the needy along with activities like a declamation speech delivered by Shynita Mukherjee who stood 4th in the ASISC Zonal Declamation contest. A dance was performed to the tune of “Vijay Bhava…” to celebrate 75 years of Indian Independence. A fusion of music and art on the same theme was performed. This was followed by a dance on the theme of different elements of nature. The last performance of the day was a song on ‘War and Futility’ by the students.
