Ranchi, Dec. 14: The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard the SLP of Kolkata-based businessman and the ‘cash for PIL’ accused, Amit Agrawal. Arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in this case and currently lodged at the Birsa Munda Central Jail, Amit Agrawal has requested for bail.
A division bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice M. M. Sundresh asked whether or not the court should grant him bail in this case. The Supreme Court fixed this matter for hearing on December 16.
Amit Agrawal’s advocate Ranjita Rohtagi assisted by additional advocate general of Jharkhand Arunabh Choudhary claimed that the ED arrested Amit Agrawal owing to his proximity with the Jharkhand Chief Minister. They further argued that Amit Agrawal had lodged an FIR against Jharkhand High Court advocate Rajiv Kumar and he was arrested along with extortion money worth Rs. 50 lakh cash. But the ED made Amit Agrawal as the main accused and Rajiv Kumar as the second accused. Rajiv Kumar was granted bail in the same case whereas Amit Agrawal is still in judicial custody. On this, Justice Sanjeev Khanna said that if the lawyer was granted bail “we deem it fit to allow his bail also.”
Earlier, during the previous hearing held on December 12, the Supreme Court observed that Amit Agrawal was repeatedly coming to the Supreme Court to seek some reliefs hence the court would hear his matter.
Amit Agrawal has challenged the Enforcement Directorate (ED) prosecuting him as an accused in this case despite him being a complainant and Jharkhand High court advocate extorted money to give him relief in the shell company related PIL.
