New Delhi, Jan 8: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court asking the court to order the establishment of a high-powered joint committee, headed by a retired justice of the high court, that will investigate this issue right away for the residents of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, who are involved in rehabilitation.

A practising lawyer who filed the petition, Rohit Rohit Dandriyal, claimed that the town of Joshimath, Uttarakhand’s past construction activity served as a catalyst for the current situation and that by engaging in these activities, the respondents violated the fundamental rights of the residents of Joshimath.

The plea added that the respondent must operate as a welfare state and is obligated to provide its inhabitants with contemporary, livable housing. It is imperative that the government of India recognise the hardship of the residents of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and take action to give them access to the necessities for a decent living.

The Division bench of the Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear the appeal in the upcoming week.

Joshimath, a hill town in Uttarakhand, has experienced disruption in recent days as locals have taken to the streets to call for action over the fractures that have appeared in their homes. In 2021, residences in the holy village of Chamoli, which is 6,000 feet above sea level and hidden in the tranquil hills, began sustaining cracks and damage, which alarmed and alarmed the locals. Over 570 homes have received damages or cracks since the first reports of the cracks in 2021 following landslides in Chamoli, according to the petition, while inhabitants routinely felt seismic tremors in the years that followed.
