Dhanbad: IIT ISM alumnus wins young scientist award

Dhanbad, Jan 10: Prof Santanu Ghosh, an alumnus of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad has won the Young Scientist Award in Earth System Sciences Section in the Indian Science Congress held at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur from January 3 to 7.  

Prof Rajni Singh, dean (media and branding) of IIT ISM  giving this information today said that Prof Santanu Ghosh had completed his PhD in Applied Geology from IIT (ISM) in 2021 and has made his alma mater proud by winning this prestigious Award.

Prof Ghosh, who is presently working as an assistant professor in the department of Geology of Mizoram University, completed his PhD in 2021 under the supervision of senior Professor Atul Kumar Verma, Department of Applied Geology of IIT (ISM) and Dr Vinod Atmaram Mendhe, senior principal scientist ofCentral Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) Dhanbad.

His topic was Optical and Geochemical Paradigms of Coal Metamorphosis from Bituminous to Anthracite with an assessing note on Secondary Microbial Methanogenesis from Bituminous Rank.

Prof Ghosh completed his Graduation and Post-Graduation in Applied Geology from Presidency College, University of Calcutta and later pursued his PhD from IIT (ISM) and was awarded the best PhD Thesis award both at Department Level as well as Institute Level at IIT (ISM) for his PhD thesis.

He was an occupational trainee (between May-June 2017) of the University of Queensland, Australia and is also a recipient of the DST INSPIRE Scholarship Award of the Department of Science & Technology, India from 2010 to 2015.

A merit scholar of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Examination, Ghosh, whose research interest lies in wide areas including, Organic Petrology, Organic Geochemistry, Palaeoclimatic and Palaeodepositional reconstruction using Lipid Biomarkers & Stable Isotopic proxies, Petroleum Geochemistry, Kerogen and Bitumen Biochemistry.

He also has credit for attending a large number of conferences, seminars, and symposia including the 71st  Meeting and Symposium of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology at Hague, Netherlands from September 14 to 21, 2019 and the Goldschmidt Conference 2017, Paris, France
