New Delhi, Jan 13: Sharad Yadav, a former Union minister and RJD leader, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 75. His daughter Subhashini Sharad Yadav confirmed the information on Twitter.

The former minister was brought to Gurugram’s Fortis hospital since his health had been declining. Sharad Yadav was transported to the emergency room in a ‘unconscious and unresponsive state,’ according to a statement from the hospital, and he had ‘no pulse or recordable blood pressure.’ Despite the greatest efforts of the medical staff, the hospital reported that Yadav was unable to be resuscitate and was pronounced dead at 10:19 pm.

One of the tallest socialist leaders in the nation, Yadav, occupied a central position in Janata politics for many years. He was a three-time member of the Rajya Sabha and a seven-time Lok Sabha MP.

Sharad Yadav was seen as having forced then-Prime Minister VP Singh’s hand in 1990 in order to implement the Mandal Commission report granting reservation to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), which altered the course of Indian politics. Sharad Yadav was elected as an MP from three states (Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar).

It was believed that the UPA II government delayed passing the Women’s Reservation Bill due to Sharad Yadav’s insistence for a caste-based quota.
