Nepal plane crash: Death toll rises to 67, five-member commission to probe

New Delhi, Jan 15: At least 67 people have died in Nepal today when a plane carrying about 72 people from the capital Kathmandu crashed in Pokhara this morning. The aircraft that crashed in western Nepal between the city’s old and new airports carried 68 passengers and four crew members. The Yeti Airlines twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft was flying from Kathmandu, the country of Nepal.

There were six kids and 15 foreign passengers. The airline added in a statement that there were 53 Nepalis, 5 Indians, 4 Russians, 2 Koreans, 1 Argentinian, and 1 each from Ireland, Australia, and France on board.

Meanwhile,  a five-person commission of inquiry was established by the Nepali government on Sunday to look into the Yeti Airlines plane disaster in Pokhara, which left at least 32 people dead.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, aka ‘Prachanda,’ requested an urgent meeting of the Council of Ministers. The 72-passenger aircraft, which also had five Indians on board, fell into the Seti River valley as it was making a landing at the Pokhara airport.

One day of mourning to honour the victims of the Yeti Airlines plane tragedy was also declared during the emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers.

According to Bishnu Paudel, the administration has chosen to observe a single day of mourning. He is also the deputy prime minister and finance minister. Similar to this, a five-person panel of investigation has been established to look into the Yeti Airlines plane disaster in Pokhara.

On board the aircraft were four crew members and a total of 68 passengers.
