New Delhi, Jan 31: Gujarat’s Gandhinagar Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced self-described godman Asaram Bapu to life in prison in connection with a rape case from 2013.
Around ten years ago, a woman from Surat accused Asaram of repeatedly raping her while she was a guest at his ashram in Motera, Ahmedabad.
Asaram and his son Narayan Sai were accused of raping the woman and her sister. In this case, Narayan Sai received a life sentence in 2019. He was arrested in 2013 after a country-wide manhunt.
Earlier on Monday, court in Gandhinagar convicted him. Asaram was convicted for offences under Sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural sex), 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 346 (wrongful confinement), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The survivor was allegedly imprisoned by Asaram in his Asharam on the outskirts of Surat city and was frequently raped from 2001 to 2006, according to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad.
Asaram has been found guilty in other cases before. Along with other shorter sentences, he is already serving a life sentence for two different sexual offences.
He was brought from Indore, where he was detained in 2013, to a jail in Jodhpur in 2018, where he is currently being held.
