Air India Express returns to Abu Dhabi after engine catches fire

New Delhi, Feb 3: An Air India Express flight from Abu Dhabi to Calicut landed back at Abu Dhabi airport after flames were detected in one of the engines shortly after the takeoff, said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said on Friday.

As per information, a total of 184 passengers were on board the Air India Express flight when one of the engines developed a technical hook and caught flame. The plane landed safely and all passengers were safe.

The National regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said the plane was a Boeing 737-800 and that it was involved in (an) air turnback.

“Today an Air India Express B737-800 aircraft VT-AYC operating flight IX 348 (Abu Dhabi-Calicut ) was involved in Airturnback due to the No.1 engine flameout at 1000ft during the climb,” said DGCA.

The airline has confirmed that the flight returned to Abu Dhabi airport shortly after takeoff due to technical problems.

“Technical snag was identified while taking off and the aircraft landed back safely, following all laid down procedures in Abu Dhabi International Airport with the 184 passengers onboard,” said Air India Express in a statement.

The aviation regulatory body, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has ordered a detailed probe regarding the incident.

“This event has been reported to the regulatory authorities as per protocol, and alternative arrangements are being made for the guests. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our guests on board,” read the statement.

Earlier on January 23, an Air India Express flight from Trivandrum to Muscat landed back 45 minutes after taking off due to a technical glitch.
