Turkey declares 3-month state of emergency in earthquake hit provinces

New Delhi, Feb 7: Turkish President Erdogan on Tuesday declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces hit by massive earthquakes, reports Turkey’s Anadolu news agency citing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan declared that the government intended to open hotels in Antalya to temporarily shelter people impacted by the earthquakes.

Notably, 70 countries had offered assistance in search and rescue operations, according to Reuters.

The area, which covered 450 kilometres from Adana in the west to Diyarbakir in the east and from Malatya in the north to Hatay in the south, was said to have affected 1.35 crore people, according to Turkish authorities.

A total of 20,426 people were hurt and 5,775 buildings were demolished, and there were 285 aftershocks, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
