Dhanbad, Feb 18: A team from IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) today performed two different street corner plays in residential rural schools of Dhanbad to make them aware of the relevance of science and technology in today’s world.

Prof Rajni Singh, dean of media and branding of the IIT ISM said that the team of 33 students from the department of Management Study today visited Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya Nirsa and Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya Jharia and apprised the students about the significance of science, technology and mathematics through staging corner plays. Altogether 870 students attended it.

Prof Singh said the team performed at Nirsa in the morning and at Jharia school in the afternoon. Abhay Dramatics Club (the students club of the institution) performed synchronization, voice modulation, and music while playing drama.

Prof Rashmi Singh, who is also the principal investigator of the project titled ‘Motivate School Students & Teachers Concerning the Relevance of Science & Technology through Innovative Communication Technique, said, “Nukkad Natak or Street Theatre is a flagship event of drama where you grasp the audience around you, so we used the method to convince students and faculty members about the relevance of Science &Technology and mathematics.”

Singh added that street theatre or Street Corner Play is performed in public spaces as a platform to raise awareness of social issues.

Prof Singh said street corner plays’ popularity increased significantly during the 1980s, which encouraged political parties and large corporations to use Nukkad for their own publicity.

He added that it can be used to convey simple messages as well as demonstrate and practise skills.
