Jamshedpur, Feb 23: A 26-year-old youth, Afsar Hussain, tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat and wrist at the Mango thana lock-up on Thursday afternoon.

Soon after the matter came to the fore the police rushed him to MGM medical college hospital where the injured is undergoing treatment under custody.

A resident of road no. 6 in Mango, Afsar was picked up for interrogation in connection with a case of assault and extortion. Before being interrogated, the accused was kept in the thana lock-up where made the suicidal bid.

The accused claimed that he was extremely upset because despite being innocent he was getting framed in a criminal case.

Mango thana OC, Vinay Kumar said that there was evidence against Afsar for his involvement in the case.

“Moreover, we had kept him in the thana lock-up for interrogation. How could we have released him without interrogation? But before we could do something, he prompted to make a bid on his life,” said Kumar while talking to lagatar24.com.

Afsar cut his right-hand wrist and throat with a shaving blade.

The police are probing into how did he arrange the blade after being lodged in the lock-up.  The constable posted on lock-up duty is also being grilled.

The condition of the injured is, however, stated to be out of danger.
