New Delhi, March 4: Koustav Bagchi, a Congress leader and lawyer, was detained by the Kolkata Police for insulting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on a private television talk show.
Following his remarks, a written complaint was made against the Congress politician, who has long been outspoken against the chief minister and the ruling party, at the Burtolla Police Station in Kolkata.
Immediately after receiving the complaint, police filed a FIR.
About three in the morning, a police squad from Burtolla police station arrived at the leader’s home in Barrackpore. The Congress spokesperson was taken into custody at 7:30 am on Saturday morning after spending hours being questioned.
A case under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 354A (sexual harassment), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505 (act induces or is likely to induce any person to commit an offence against state or against public tranquility), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) of the Indian penal code (IPC) has been registered against Bagchi.
Congress members began demonstrating in front of the Burtolla Police Station in response to his social media post, calling for Bagchi’s immediate release.
