New Delhi, March 17: Within minutes of convening on Friday, the Rajya Sabha’s operations were suspended for the day for the fifth consecutive day due to a commotion caused by statements made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about Indian democracy and the Adani problem in London.

As the Rajya Sabha convened at 11 am, the commotion broke out shortly after the papers were placed on the table. Members of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his comments on Indian democracy and criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he made in London.

In the meantime, Congress lawmakers voiced their concerns and began criticising the administration, calling for a Joint Parliamentary Committee investigation into the Adani Group.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar recessed the House until March 20 at 11 a.m. despite the commotion.

Since March 13 day one of the second phase of the Budget Session a dispute over Gandhi’s comments in London has reverberated in the House, forcing daily adjournments.

The Rajya Sabha was forced to adjourn for the entire day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as a result of the treasury benches’ demand for an apology for Gandhi’s remarks about Indian democracy in London and the opposition’s objections to the matter and demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee investigation into the Adani Group.

Rajya Sabha Leader Piyush Goyal brought up the issue on Tuesday, pointing out that “this is the first time” a Member of Parliament used comments against the democracy of India while on a tour outside of the nation, and he demanded Rahul Gandhi’s apology.

Nevertheless, the members of the opposition demanded on Tuesday that a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) look into the Adani Group after accusing the government of remaining mute on a study by a US firm that claimed the group had engaged in stock manipulation and accounting fraud.
