Jamshedpur, March 18: A 22-year-old youth was lynched by a couple after he was caught while stealing battery from a stationary tractor at Shivnarayanpur village in Gamharia under the Adityapur thana area.

Identified as Lolup Gope, the victim was a resident of Shivnarayanpur itself and was caught stealing the battery from the residential premises of Putru Tuddu at about 1.30 am today.

Having caught the thief, first Putru Tuddu had started hitting him with a stick. Subsequently, Tuddu’s wife joined him in the assault. Both the husband and wife thrashed the youth so severely that he fell fatally injured.

The victim lay at the spot writhing in pain without any medical care till this morning. When a police party reached the spot getting information about the incident and wanted to rescue him, he was already dead.

Soon after police recovered the body and sent it to Seraikela Sadar Hospital for postmortem. The police had subsequently started an investigation and having established that the youth was beaten to death by the Tuddu couple, the police immediately arrested them on a murder charge.

The police have also recovered the sticks that the couple had used in the lynching.
