New Delhi, April 2: Kane Williamson was ruled out of IPL 2023 on Sunday, as a result of an injury he suffered during Gujarat Titans’ opening game against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31.

“We regret to announce, Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the TATA IPL 2023, after sustaining an injury in the season opener against Chennai Super Kings. We wish our Titan a speedy recovery and hope for his early return,” the Titans wrote on Twitter.

The veteran was attempting to rescue a boundary when he was hurt. He then clumsily fell to his knees and left the park by walking. Sai Suadharsan later joined the Titans as an impact player, taking Williamson’s place in the batting order.

Williamson, who was acquired by the 2022 champions for his base price of INR 2 crore, is yet to be replaced by the Titans. The foreign hitters who might take the position of the New Zealander in GT’s batting order are David Miller and Matthew Wade.

In their inaugural match, the Titans defeated CSK by a margin of five wickets. Rashid Khan ended with excellent stats of 4-0-26-2, earning him the title of Player of the Match. With four balls remaining in their innings, the Titans chased down 179 as Shubman Gill hit 63 off 36. Rashid and Rahul Tewatia maintained their composure to assist their group in crossing the finish line.

On Tuesday, April 4 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the Titans will square off against David Warner’s Delhi Capitals.
