Jamshedpur, April 7: A three-year-old child was run over by a trailer at Jayantgarh under the Jagannathpur thana area in West Singhbhum, leading the local residents to set the heavy vehicle on fire today.

The child was crossing the NH-75 E near Behera Sahi clutching her mother’s hand on Friday afternoon when the mishap took place. In the mishap, the child was killed instantly and her mother was seriously injured. The local residents rushed the injured woman to a hospital at Champua in the Keonjhar district of bordering Odisha.

As the trailer driver fled the scene leaving the vehicle abandoned at a little distance away, the agitated residents set the heavy vehicle on fire. The residents had also set up a blockade on the national highway, protesting against rash driving in the region.

A police party from the Jagannathpur thana which had reached the spot immediately pressed a fire brigade on service to douse the aflame trailer.

The police subsequently convinced the protesters to lift the blockade which remained in place for more than an hour. Later the police removed the mishap victim’s body to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital for postmortem.

The region being a mining belt, the Jaintgarh-Chaibasa road which is a part of the NH-75E remains occupied with the communication of heavy vehicles and the drivers of the heavy vehicles tend to drive at a breakneck speed.
