New Delhi, April 13: The late Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar’s grandson on Wednesday filed a criminal defamation complaint against Congressman Rahul Gandhi in Maharashtra court, accusing him of making false accusations against Savarkar during his speech in London.

Satyaki Savarkar, the grandson, said that his attorneys had filed a case with the city’s courts under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code.

“Since the concerned court officer was absent today, they asked us to come again on Saturday to get the number of the case. We have not received the case number yet and we will receive it on Saturday,” Satyaki Savarkar told PTI.

“Rahul Gandhi told the gathering that VD Savarkar had written a book in which the latter stated that he and his five to six friends were beating a Muslim man and he (Savarkar) felt happy,” he added.

“Rahul Gandhi, while speaking about this incident, asked if it was not a cowardly act. First of all, this incident, as narrated by Gandhi, is a fictional one. No such incident had taken place in the life of Savarkar who was a man of scientific temperament. He believed in democracy and had advised Muslims to adopt a scientific approach,” Satyaki Savarkar further said.

He asserted that there is a video of Rahul Gandhi saying these things during the interaction, and it would be shown in court.

One of the two lawyers defending Satyaki Savarkar, Anirudh Ganu, stated, “They told us to come on Saturday and the case number will be issued because the court officer (assistant registrar) was not present in the court.”

Rahul Gandhi was found guilty of criminal defamation and given a two-year prison term on March 23 in Surat after making the statement, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” in 2019. As a result, he was disqualified from serving in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi then filed a petition with the sessions court, which on April 3 granted him bail and continued the hearing on his request for a stay of conviction until April 13.
