Imphal, May 7: As the curfew relaxed on Sunday in parts of Manipur that had experienced horrific ethnic rioting over the previous several days, life began to slowly return to normal under the watchful eyes of army drones and helicopters positioned for overhead reconnaissance.

During the curfew relaxation time from 7 am to 10 am in riot-affected Churachandpur town, people could be observed flocking out in large numbers to purchase food, medications, and other necessities.

As soon as the curfew relaxation ended at 10 am, columns of the Army and Assam Rifles conducted a flag march through the town. In total, 120–125 Army columns have been stationed throughout the riot-stricken state.

10,000 soldiers, paramilitary personnel, and central police forces, according to sources, have been stationed in Manipur.

In order to guarantee that peace measures are carried out at the grassroots level, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that peace committees would be established in each assembly district.

According to a statement from the defence department, 23,000 civilians from all communities have so far been rescued and moved to military garrisons.
