Chief Justice DY Chandrachud wants to junk subordinate tag for district courts

Ranchi, May 24: Chief Justice of India D.Y Chandrachud today pleaded for giving equal status to the district courts while addressing a function organized to inaugurate the new Jharkhand High Court building here.

He said when district courts are called subordinate courts it gives an impression that it is not independent and this impression is required to be changed. The Chief Justice said it is the duty of the Supreme Court and High Courts to make the subordinate court capable.

Chief justice Chandrchud said it will be difficult to maintain the faith of common people in the judiciary until there is delay in granting bail to undertrials. He talked about timely hearing, timely procurement of order copies, proper arrangement of water, food and washroom facilities in courts.

He also stressed upon the availability of judgment copy in all scheduled languages of the country and shared the initiatives taken by the apex court in this direction. He said that with the help of IT, live streaming of judicial proceedings will be done to take the judiciary in each and every house of the country to ensure that people can take advantage of the judiciary without disturbing their normal life.

The Chief Justice during the address also mentioned the problem of backward and tribal people saying many do not have their land documents and it is the duty of the judiciary to pay attention to this. He talked about taking the judiciary to 6.40 lakh villages of the country.
