Thiruvananthapuram, May 31: In solidarity of the wrestler’s protest, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students Federation of India (SFI) jointly announced a national protest beginning on June 4.
Due to claims of sexual harassment, wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia have been protesting against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), and have called for his arrest.
“DYFI and SFI demanded the immediate arrest of Brij Bhushan and to withdraw all false cases against the wrestlers immediately. Through this protest, we demand that the Prime minister should apologize for the police violence unleashed upon wrestlers,” DYFI national president AA Rahim said.
Olympic medal-winning wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia travelled to Haridwar in Uttarakhand on Tuesday with Vinesh Phogat to immerse all of their medals, including their Olympic ones, in the Ganga as a symbol of their protest.
On Tuesday, farmer leader Naresh Tikait intervened to prevent protesting wrestlers from submerging their medals in the Ganga and said that a Khap meeting would be held to discuss the situation.
The Olympic medal-winning wrestlers from India Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia along with Vinesh Phogat and Sangeeta Phogat were stopped by Delhi Police on Sunday as they attempted to march to the new Parliament building, where they intended to hold a protest.
