Jamshedpur, June 9: Two passengers were killed and about half-a-dozen others were injured as an interstate bus they were travelling in hit a trailer from behind on NH-33 under Chandil thana area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district early on Friday morning.
Those killed were identified as Jairani Devi (85) and Devendra Prasad Yadav (39), both residents of Nawada district in Bihar.
The bus, Shivashakti, was coming from Nawada to Jamshedpur when the mishap took place at Saharbera under Chandil thana area about 30 km away from here at about 3.30 am.
According to police, the bus which was at a moderately high speed had hit a trailer from behind, causing the front side of the bus to get badly damaged resulting in the fatalities.
“Probably, the driver had fallen asleep while driving before hitting the bus, ” said the Chandil Thana OC while talking to lagatar24.com.
Soon after the mishap, a police party arrived at the spot and carried out a rescue operation. Despite two of the passengers already dead, the police rushed all the victims that include children to the MGM medical college hospital in the steel city.
Those injured include Madhu Verma, Munni Verma, Pratik Kumar, Anmol Kumar, Harsh Kumar and Shivaj.
Several other passengers were released after first aid at the medical college hospital.
