Jamshedpur, June 17: A 42-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant near her house at Chaliam village under the Chakulia thana area in the Ghatsila sub-division of the East Singhbhum district on Saturday morning.
The incident took place at about 4 am, when the victim identified as Prabhati Kar was going to meet nature’s call at a nearby field.
While the victim was moving toward the field, the elephant which was hiding behind a bush suddenly appeared before her and trampled her to death.
By the time the victim’s family members and others came out of their houses after hearing the commotion, the killer elephant disappeared from the scene.
A forest department team and a police party reached Chaliam village in the morning. The police sent the body for postmortem.
Having taken the statement of the family members and other villagers, the forest department paid the victim’s brother Vinod Kar Rs 25,000 which is a part of the Rs 4 lakh compensation package.
It may be noted here this was the fourth case of elephant trampling deaths to have taken place in the Ghatsila sub-division during the past one month.
Apart from these deaths, five persons, including two women were injured by the wild elephants during the same period there.
