Imphal, July 2: A notification on Sunday stated that restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC have been loosened in Manipur’s violent Imphal West district.

Restrictions on people’s freedom of movement were put in place on May 3 following riots that broke out in the state, according to the notification made public on Saturday by Additional District Magistrate N Johnson Meetei.

“… restriction of movement of general public outside their residences is hereby lifted for 2nd July 2023 (Sunday) from 05:00 AM to 06:00 PM for all areas of Imphal West District,” it said.

The decision was made as a result of the district’s noticeable improvement in law and order, according to the statement. It also stated that the restrictions needed to be relaxed to allow people to purchase necessities like food and medicine.

The ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the northeastern state has already claimed more than 100 lives.

The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribes, who live in the hill districts.
