New Delhi, July 20: After a video of two women being paraded naked on a road by a bunch of men went viral on social media the previous day, Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday.
The Home Minister called and asked about the horrifying incident that allegedly took place on May 4 in the Kangpokpi district, some 35 kilometres from the state capital Imphal, in which two tribal women were paraded naked and gang-raped in a field.
According to sources, the home minister has ordered the police to punish the offenders severely.
N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, has commanded the police to look into this situation right away.
The event, according to the police, took place in a different district, despite the fact that the first information report (FIR) was submitted in Kangpokpi.
As the video went viral, Manipur Police said in a press release on Wednesday that while the state has been peaceful over the past 24 hours, there have been intermittent shooting incidents and crowd gatherings in various locations.
“As regard to the viral videos of two women paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants on 4th May 2023, a case of abduction, gangrape and murder was registered at Nongpok Sekmai PS (Thoubal District) against unknown armed miscreants and the investigation has been started,” the Police has said.
The police declared on Wednesday that they were making every attempt to apprehend the offenders as soon as possible.
“The State Police and Central forces conducted search operations in different vulnerable and fringe areas of both valley and hill districts. Two arms with two magazines were recovered by district police in Imphal East in the operation. Curfew relaxation was curtailed in five valley districts and Churachandpur. Strict security measures were taken up to enforce the curfew,” Manipur Police has said.
The police had detained 452 people in connection with infractions in various districts of the state as of Wednesday and a total of 126 Nakas and Checkpoints had been placed in the state’s different districts, both in the hill and the valley.
The police have also urged the public to lend any assistance they can in returning the state to normalcy, to clarify any rumours by calling the Central Control Room’s rumour-free number (9233522822), and to return and deposit any weapons, ammunition or explosives to the police or security forces right away.
