New Delhi, July 24: Amidst the survey at Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, the Supreme Court asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to clearly tell the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) that no excavation should be done at the mosque site. On the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi campus, the Supreme Court has banned any kind of excavation on the campus for a week (till Wednesday).

The CJI told the Muslim side that if they want, SC can give them two weeks’ time so that they can approach the High Court. During this, there will be no work like digging there. If ASI is only doing work like measuring and photography there, then how can the appearance of that place change. The CJI said that he is still considering the possibilities. At the same time, the Solicitor General said that it would be better if the High Court hears this case on merit.

In fact, District Judge AK Vishwesh had ordered a scientific survey of the mosque premises on Friday. The ASI has to submit the report of the survey to the district court of Varanasi by August 4. The Muslim side has filed a petition in the Supreme Court. On this, the Supreme Court said that we can ask the ASI to maintain the status quo till then. At the same time, the demand of the Muslim side is that the survey should be banned. The CJI said that we can instruct the ASI not to do any digging at the moment. It can be heard on Friday. Today the Muslim side put the matter of the Gyanvapi survey in front of the CJI bench.
