Hazaribag, Aug 9: MP Jayant Sinha today drew the attention of the Lok Sabha to the problem of water supply in Jharkhand. He said the JMM-Congress government failed to provide clean water to villagers. Sinha, who is also the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, drew the attention of the house under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha on the serious issue of the water supply problem in Jharkhand. He said that the JMM-Congress government in Jharkhand is performing very poorly in providing tap water to the rural population under the Jal Jeevan Mission and Har Ghar Jal Yojana.
He said water is a state subject and hence the primary responsibility of implementing water-related schemes to provide tap water to households lies with the concerned state or union territory. Till July 2023 only 39.02 per cent of rural households in Jharkhand have reported tap connection. To put this in perspective, more than 37 lakh rural households in Jharkhand do not have a clean tap water connection. In comparison, states like Gujarat and Haryana have 100 per cent tap connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission, he added.
Sinha said that at a time when our country is one of the largest economies of the world and is ready to become a world leader, Jharkhand is unable to even provide tap water to its rural population. He has urged the central government to give strict instructions to the state government to expedite the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission and Har Ghar Jal Yojana.
