Islamabad, Sept 26: A special court in Pakistan has prolonged the judicial remand of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Cipher case for another 14 days, reducing the prospects of his early release.

Khan, who serves as the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was taken into custody last month following allegations of breaching the Official Secrets Act. He was accused of revealing a confidential diplomatic cable (cipher) sent by the country’s embassy in Washington in March of the previous year.

Khan, 70, has been remanded in custody three times now. The previous 14-day detention came to an end today.

Khan has been held in the District Jail Attock since August 5 after being arrested following his conviction in the Toshakhana case.

Special court judge Abual Hasnat Zulqernain presided over hearings there.

Following the hearing, the court mandated that he remain in judicial custody until October 10 in order to complete the investigation.

Although Khan was to be transferred to the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi on Monday, the Islamabad High Court’s directive was not followed.
