Jaipur, Oct 11: The Election Commission unveiled a revised timetable on Wednesday, changing the Rajasthan Assembly elections’ date from November 23 to November 25, with the results slated for release on December 3.
The poll panel announced that it was changing the date due to weddings and “social engagements” that day.
“Representations have been received by the Commission from various political parties, social organisations and also issues raised in various media platforms for change of date of poll considering large scale wedding, social engagement on that day which may cause inconvenience to a large number of people, various logistics issues and may lead to reduced voter participation during the poll,” the Election Commission said in a statement.
The tenure of the Rajasthan Assembly, which has 200 seats, expires on January 14, 2024, and a Congress-led government is currently running the state.
Rajasthan’s Assembly elections took place on a single day on December 7, 2018. The Congress party became the largest single party with 100 seats, narrowly missing a majority by just one seat. In contrast, the BJP secured 73 seats, marking a substantial decline from the 2013 elections when they had won an outright majority with 163 seats.
Following this, the Congress party established the government with backing from the Bahujan Samaj Party and other political parties. Senior Congress figure Ashok Gehlot took the oath as the new Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and Sachin Pilot assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister.
